Typhoid, or typhoid fever, is a life-threatening disease that is more common in places with poor hygiene. It is best avoided by ensuring access to clean and safe water, better hygiene among people who handle food, and proper sanitation. It can also be prevented with the help of Typhoid Conjugate Vaccination (TCV).

What is Typhoid?

Typhoid is an infection of life-threatening proportions, caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi. The disease has affected tens of millions of people worldwide.

How is Typhoid transmitted?

Typhoid is known to spread through food and water that is contaminated. Hence, there is a huge chance of getting infected with Typhoid in places that have poor sanitation and unsafe drinking water.

What are the symptoms and complications of Typhoid?

Typhoid symptoms include:

  • Prolonged high fever
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhoea or constipation
  • Loss of appetite

Some may even have a rash. People who do not get treatment can continue having a fever for weeks or months. Severe cases of Typhoid fever can lead to complications or even death.

When should a child receive Vaccination for Typhoid (TCV)?

Children should receive a single dose between the ages of 6 months to 9 months.

If a child has not received this dose until 9 months of age, consult your doctor for a catch-up vaccination
